Good luck with the roadworthy! Whatever bits fail you can probably borrow from a fellow golfer for the re-inspection.

We used to keep a Type 3 windscreen just for roadworthies, I lost count of how many cars we registered with that screen.

I once got failed because my interior light didn't work - he just kept saying "all lights on the car must be functional." I pulled it out and replaced it with a blanking plate.

I usually leave something cheap to fix for them to find on the first go.

Watch out that they don't try to con you into letting them do any repairs. It's cheaper to fix it yourself.

I'm getting it done a Kmart T&A, so hopefully they don't know much about Golfs, and I'll be able to pass stuff off as standard...

bahahaha. I failed on a couple of items:

here the list. lucky the didn't notice anything wrong in the engine bay, that could have been bad....

-Front park lights not working (sorted)
-R/H number plate light not working (sorted)
-R/H rear seat belt twisted (sorted) (i think)
-R/H front seat belt frayed
-Boot seal torn (sorted) (I hope)
-Spacers on wheels at the rear
-(the most interesting one) Wheels too wide/Tyres too wide
-Springs in rear not secure (second most interesting one)

So I didn't expect to fail because of my tyres and wheels! or my rear suspension! I'll be able too put the stock springs in the back on, my standard tyres back on, remove the spacers and fix the twisted rear seat belt. And perhap, the boot seal, if i've got some spare stuff..? and I can get new lights.

but the parkers seem to be and issue with me. My head ligths are different, and only one has a spot for a park light.

and where can I procure myself a new seatbelt?? that'll be a tough one, and perhaps a new boot hatch seal as well?

anyone help me out here at all?

BUHAHAHAHAHA wheels to wide tyres to wide, $10 bet they had some young apprentice readying off a stock standard book about Golfs and had no chance about what he new. You should have returned everything to stock and then went crazy thats what I would have done!

Damn, thats tough! If those wheels are too wide I wont ever be bringing my golf to Vic. Lucky in SA they just look at the engine numbers. Unless they are dressed in Blue.

I cant believe they do you for like a torn boot seal what does that matter. Seats belts yeh they are always a pain, my first car had a rear seat belt that was torn half way, used to catch real bad would like to see that car pass a RWC.

New headlights are available, avoid the autopal ones. Matt probably has some good s/h ones. I think VolksBaru might have some.

The seat belt issue has complications. It's actually illegal for wreckers to sell second hand seatbelts in Victoria. You could buy a brand new universal seatbelt but it MUST be retractable to pass the roadworthy, the trouble with this is that depending on the year of your Golf you may not have the mount on the tunnel to bolt the stalk to. The mount can be easily fabricated if need be, but must meet certain criteria. I can assist here if you chose this option.

I think that the rear retractors from a SEAT will mount in the front of a Golf with the front SEAT buckles off the SEAT seats, but I haven't tried it yet.

I'd suggest borrowing a belt for the roadworthy but you really need to do it properly - they might just save you life one day.

For the boot seal wander down to Clarke rubber and have a look at their pinch weld sections, I'm sure you'll find something that will do the job. Otherwise you'll have to order one. Remember to measure how much you'll need before you go and get some black silastic and a round rubber offcut to make the join.

That requirement was put in place because pensioners in Vans were monoxiding themselves to death when they hit the highways post retirement.

In some cars there is a positive (or is it negative?) pressure zone setup behind the tailgate which can draw exhaust fumes into the cabin through a faulty hatch seal. The door seals don't get the same attention, it's only the hatches on vans and hatchbacks.

I think the seat belt I might borrow off someone, just for roadworthy, and then look for amore permament solution later on.

I have 7 days to mee the point on the RW slip, otherwise I have to pay another 70 bucks to get it done later on.

Seriously though - get that seat belt sorted asap. You don't want your passenger messing up that new windscreen by trying to exit the vehicle through it.

More to the point though, I don't want me going through my nice new windscreen!

So I will be looking for a better alternative for the long run atleast.. I'm going to go give Dean a visit and see what my options are.



Headlight and number plate light issues seem to be fixed (just need new globes) as does the rear hatch seal, although I may need to silastic the joins on the section I glued in. I checked witht he guys, the seal can have crack, ie joins in it, So hopefully what I've done there will be good enough.

just the wheels I need too. and fix up the suspension. and I'll be seaworthy! or roadworthy as the case may be

I was just down at VP myself today about roadworthy's... Cause my car is poo! (your car is looking better than mine at the moment)

I read the guide online. Essentially a RWC is not a document to say the car is 100% mechanically good, just safe to drive on the road.

I am very suprised about the tyre thingo! In victoria, you are allowed to have wheels no wider than 2" from standard. Diameter is not the issue. lol. were your stockies 13x4's? LOL!!!

Yea the wheels thing is wack. he mentioned something about the offset being different, and causing the wheels to scrub and thats the unroadworthy part. meh. I should be able to get it fixed...

Unfortuntaley with the seat belts, there aren't many options. buy a brand new one for $160 from VP or don't pass roadworthy.. I'll probably borrow one for the roadie, and buy a new one later on.

vic rwc's can be alot of fun
you would find most cars with mags would be unroadworthy
you can not increase the trac on a macpherson strut front end !
but most roadworthiers don't look to hard
but spacers a big no no !
and your wheel not aloud to touch any part of gaurd in out lip nothing
they can even ping you for the seal across the rain tray that seals bonnet
cause you can get engine fumes into your vent system
over all i think you did pretty well

Nah I got it done at Kmart T&A, figured they'd be easier than the RTA!
I left the spacers on as a distraction, so they'd notice that and be like yea, fix that and it'll be alright.

The 7 days, is just so I don't have to pay to get my car roadied again. If I go back with everything fixed, they just give me the other slip, and I go on my way.

Interestingly though. the back wheels would foul the rear suspension, but I'm pretty sure the fronts are fine, no fouling on anything, so they should be legal!

does anyone know the standard offset of mk 3 steelies? mk 1 steelies standard offset is 38 isn't it?

Can't tell you what the offset is, but they'll fit a mk1. A mate of mine in town has a mk1 4 door with mk3 steelies.
